After Teen’s Death, Family of Jabari Latrell Peoples Demands Release of Body Cam Video from Homewood Police Incident

Days after the June  23 officer-involved shooting, Peoples’ loved ones assert he was unarmed and compliant, prompting renewed calls for transparency and potential legal action if footage remains withheld.

The family of Jabari Peoples is seeking clarification following his killing by a police officer.

On June 23, the teen was killed by a Homewood, AL police officer after being shot once in the back. Following the incident, the family’s attorney is questioning why the requested body cam footage hasn’t been released to them to corroborate the police’s story that Peoples was reaching for a weapon, thus justifying the shooting.

"If the goal is to trust law enforcement, if the goal is to have transparency and believe in those who wear the badge and serve and protect us, then we need transparency,” stated family attorney Leroy Maxwell.

In the 48 hours following Peoples’ demise, it is reported that Homewood police stated they did disclose additional information. They allege that Peoples fled from the scene of the shooting to retrieve a firearm from his vehicle.

Additionally, they said the officer's body camera footage corroborated that assertion.

Arrangements were even announced to present the video to the family, but according to the family, they have yet to receive the footage.

“When statements were released that someone was working with the family through ALEA or whoever to watch the video, we were excited about that, but it's just not true,” Maxwell stated to WVTM 13.

Peoples' girlfriend maintains that he was unarmed, despite the police department's assertion that the video depicts him reaching for a gun.

"She was right beside him as he was dying. Never saw a gun before, during, and after. Never saw a gun whatsoever,” Maxwell stated. He also shared that the absence of transparency is fostering suspicion, four days following the fatal shooting at the soccer park.

"If we don't get the answers that we believe, the family lawfully deserves, we'll have no choice but to file a lawsuit and enjoin ALEA, or the city of Homewood, and force them to produce that evidence,” Maxwell stated.

According to the Homewood police, all of the video evidence has been transferred to ALEA.

A spokesman stated that the state investigators did not have a timeline for when they would present the footage to the family, despite being asked for an update. What’s more, upon the conclusion of their investigation, per a WVTM report, the Jefferson County district attorney will determine whether the officer's gunshot was justified.

A candlelight vigil is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on June 30. at South Lakeshore Drive's Homewood Soccer Park.
