Da'Vine Joy Randolph Takes Home a Golden Globe
The 81st Golden Globe Awards took place on Sunday (Jan. 7) and Da'Vine Joy Randolph took home one of the top prizes.
Starring in "The Holdovers," Randolph won the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture award for her portrayal of Mary Lamb, the head cook at Barton Academy, a New England boarding school, and grieving mother whose son was killed in the Vietnam War.
In her acceptance speech, the ultra-talented actress expressed her gratitude to Alexander Payne, the film's director. The film is about a group of prep school students forced to stay on campus over the holidays in 1970.
"Alexander Payne, thank you for giving me the opportunity to portray this beautiful and flawed woman,” the Philadelphia native said. She also thanked her co-stars Paul Giamatti, who won for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical, and Dominic Sessa, who made his film debut.
“Paul and Dominic, you have been an absolute dream to work with. And I thank you for making me a better artist because of it,” she continued.
Randolph also shared her appreciation for the character of Mary Lamb and embossing the role in the film was an unforgettable experience.
“Mary, you have changed my life. You have made me feel seen in so many ways that I have never imagined,” Randolph said. “I hope I helped you all find your inner Mary because there is a little bit of her in all of us.”
A graduate of Temple University and the Yale School of Drama, Randolph has accumulated several film credits such as Office Christmas Party (2016), Dolemite Is My Name (2019), Trolls World Tour (2020), The United States vs. Billie Holiday (2021), Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and Rustin (2023), and several more.
Hosted by comedian Jo Koy and airing on CBS, another big winner of the evening was Ayo Edebiri, who won Best Actress in a Television Musical or Comedy for The Bear.
