Who can forget Kid ‘N Play giving them New Boyz work?

Who can forget last year’s Ladies First cypher at the BET Hip Hop Awards? Who would have guessed Brandy had a 16 in her like that?

And we’re fully aware of the heat we received after Lil Baby lost last year’s Artist of The Year Award to Megan Thee Stallion.

That’s what makes the BET Hip Hop Awards so exciting — artists’ and fans’ investment, every category is a close call, and you never know who will win.

As the BET Hip Hop Awards 2021 approaches, let’s look at some of the best surprises from past shows to remember just how unpredictable things can get.

  1. Kamala Harris Surprise Appearance (2020)

You can probably count on one hand how many times a Vice Presidential candidate has shown interest in an event like the BET Hip Hop Awards, and last year’s surprise appearance from Kamala Harris was one of them

Harris was just a candidate on the campaign gearing up for an election again Trump with Joe Biden when she decided to drop in to talk about HBCUs.

An HBCU product herself (Howard University), Harris spoke on how they aid Black people to strengthen their voices, pursue their dreams and explore their roles in fighting justice.

  2. Snoop Dogg And Nia Long Skits (2014)

Snoop Dogg is not only a Grammy-winning, platinum record-selling rapper; he’s a jack of all trades with a natural command of a room.

In 2014, he recruited actress Nia Long to run screen tests for her most popular movies, Boyz N The Hood and Big Mamma’s House. Entertaining is an understatement, as Snoop hilariously tried to cry over Ricky being shot.

  3. New Boyz Vs. Kid ‘N Play (2009)

This unexpected moment at the BET Hip Hop Awards 2009 was unique because it saw the clash of two different dance eras simultaneously, one on stage.

“You’re A Jerk” by the New Boyz was dominating the airwaves at the time, as was the complimentary jerk dance that went along with it, so you know the crowd was lit when Fonzworth Bentley brought out the 90’s hip hop group sensation Kid ‘N Play to do their thing.

  5. 2 Chainz Performs ‘I’m Different’ (2012)

2 Chainz’s 2012 smash single, “I’m Different”  was a culture reset. The legendary piano medley throughout, the endless quotables — it’s clear the Atlanta native was in his bag like the fires were at the bottom.

Much was the same when the Based On A T.R.U. Story rapper performed the single on stage at the BET Hip Hop Awards 2012, bringing out an all-white piano and choir to deliver the hits for an unforgettable night.
