T.I. Opens Up About His Return to Music at the ASCAP Brunch

The Atlanta icon reflects on legacy milestones, an unexpected Grammy nomination for a Christian record, and why returning to music right now felt right.

T.I.’s appearance at the ASCAP brunch felt less like a comeback announcement and more like a moment of alignment. After years of expanding his creative reach through comedy, film, and television, the Atlanta rap icon is stepping back into music with intention and timing that feels anything but accidental.

When I asked why now felt like the right moment to return, T.I. pointed to the milestones surrounding his legacy. “It’s the 20th anniversary of the 'King' album, the 20th anniversary of 'ATL', the 25th anniversary of 'Im Serious’” he said. “It felt like a pretty good time.”

That timing has already placed him in unexpected territory this awards season. T.I. is currently a Grammy-nominated artist, not for a hip-hop record, but for a Christian collaboration alongside Lecrae and Killer Mike, marking a meaningful shift while still rooted in authenticity.

“God has been good — and God been good to all of us,” he shared. “Myself especially, I’ve been blessed with grace more than anything.”

According to T.I., the record came together organically, driven by genuine relationships rather than a strategic approach. Lecrae, whom he describes as both a partner and someone he has “an enormous amount of love and respect for,” approached him casually with the idea. That same familiarity extended to Killer Mike, making the collaboration feel natural from the start.

“He said, ‘Hey man, how about we do the record?’ He played it for me, and I said, ‘Sure,’” T.I. recalled. “We did it right there — very casually.” When asked whether he ever expected the record to reach the level of recognition it has, including acknowledgment from the Recording Academy, T.I. was surprised. “I had no way to expect it,” he shared.

For the ATL legend, that’s what makes the moment resonate even more. Something created organically, alongside artists he genuinely respects and has longstanding relationships with, has now become one of the most talked-about chapters of his career.

“To do something so casually and effortlessly, and for it to be recognized by the Academy — that’s dope,” he said.

While he’s officially back in the music conversation, T.I. is keeping details about what’s next close to the vest. Still, he made one thing clear: more is on the way. When asked when we could expect the new project, he only said, “It’s coming soon.”

If this moment proves anything, it’s that T.I.’s return has nothing to do with chasing the past. It’s about honoring legacy, embracing growth, and reminding the culture that evolution, when it’s real, still has the power to shake the table.
