Southern University Student Dies After Reported Fraternity Pledge Ritual
The Baton Rouge Police Department is investigating the tragic death of a junior mechanical engineering student at Southern University, who collapsed during a reported fraternity pledge ritual late Wednesday night.
According to authorities, 20-year-old Caleb Wilson was participating in an off-campus pledging event for Southern University's Omega Psi Phi at North Sherwood Forest Community Park when he suddenly collapsed while pledges stood in a line. Details surrounding the incident remain unclear, but the situation is now under formal investigation, KPEL965 reported.
Wilson was transported by fraternity members to Baton Rouge General Hospital on Bluebonnet Boulevard early Thursday morning, already unresponsive upon arrival.
Medical staff pronounced him dead at 3:15 a.m., yet police were not notified of the situation until after his passing.
Southern University issued a statement acknowledging Wilson's death, describing him as a dedicated student from New Orleans and extending condolences to his family, classmates, and loved ones. The university also reminded students, faculty, and staff of available counseling services.
“As the community mourns his passing, he’s remembered as a talented trumpet player and a beloved member of Southern’s renowned Human Jukebox marching band,” the university shared.This devastating loss has left many on campus, including his father, a member of the New Orleans Police Department, grieving as they await answers.
The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed that an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause and manner of Wilson’s death, with results pending.
