Award-winning actor Anthony Anderson has been hosting the annual NAACP Image Awards starting in 2018 when he took on the role for the 49th annual show and has returned every year since, and it’s pretty obvious why.
The Black-ish star has kept viewers locked in with his belly-turning jokes and impressive musical numbers. As we prepare for the 53rd annual show, take a look back at some of Anderson’s best NAACP Image moments and see we couldn’t keep our eyes off of him.
Rap performance paying tribute to NWA.
In 2016, the Compton, California native opened up the 47th NAACP Image Awards with a fiery performance paying homage to the rap group NWA. Anderson’s performance included award-related lyrics, a gold chain, and even a jerry curl.

At the 2015 NAACP Image Awards, Anthony didn’t let up on the jokes but took the time to uplift Black artists in the industry. The host reminded stars that even if they were not recognized at other awards shows, their efforts did not go unnoticed.

As always laughs ring out the minute Anthony speaks, and it was no different at the 51st annual show. The Barber Shop actor poked fun at himself, calling out the powers that be for moving his award category to the untelevised portion of the show and shameless promoted his hit series Black-ish.
Anthony targets Michael Jordan at 52nd Annual Awards
During his opening monologue at the 52nd NAACP Awards, no one was safe from the star’s wrath, including ballplayer Michael Jordan. He also joked that he loved hosting the show, “not just because the check usually clears -- but really because I love being Black, and I love Black people.”
Anthony Pokes Fun at Will and Jada at 47th NAACP Image Awards
At the 2016 awards, the longtime host didn’t hold back on the social commentary. Anthony poked fun actress Stacey Dash and Hollywood power couple Will and Jada. The two were spotting cracking up with laughter in their seats.
