Soul Train Awards 2022: Get Familiar With R&B/Soul Singer Lucky Daye

The New Orleans native wrote for established entertainers before earning a Grammy as a solo artist.

Before making his debut on the Soul Train Awards stage last year with an unforgettable performance of hit single “Over,”  r&b crooner Lucky Daye was trying out for singing competition shows and writing for other artists, waiting for his breakthrough moment.

The day finally came with the release of his debut album, Painted, in 2019. The project put him on the map and earned him several recognitions, including Grammy nominations for ‘Best R&B Album’ and more.

The hustle hasn’t stopped for Lucky, who could be returning to the Soul Train Awards this year, hosted by comedian Deon Cole, to see if he can snatch the crown for ‘Best R&B/Soul Male Artist.’ Ahead of this year’s celebration, get to know the rising star a little better, and don’t forget to check out the show, airing Sunday, November 26, on BET.

  • He competed on ‘American Idol’

In 2005, only 19 at the time, Lucky auditioned and earned a spot on season four of the musical competition series American Idol. However, shortly after reaching the Top 20, he was eliminated from the show.

  • He established himself as a songwriter well before his career took off

Before giving fans sultry tracks such as “Roll Some Mo” and “Over,” the singer established himself as a successful songwriter penning songs including Ne-Yo’s “She Got Her Own,” Ella Mai’s "10,000 Hours", "Down,” Trey Songz’s “Song Goes Off,” and several songs from Mary J. Blige’s thirteenth studio album Strength of a Woman.

  • His debut studio album was his last attempt to breakthrough

Lucky released his debut project, Painted, in 2019. While talking to Okayplayer, he told the outlet that the project was his final attempt to make it as a solo artist in the music business.

“I tried every angle, [I] didn’t see it,” he explained. “I was homeless and tired of being hungry. It wasn’t like I was getting emotional support from nobody. It was just me.”

The album earned the seasoned musician four Grammy nominations at the 2020 event, including ‘Best R&B Album’ and ‘Best R&B Song.’

The Soul Train Awards 2022 premieres Saturday, November 26 at 8 pm ET/PT on BET and BET Her.
