Wazzup, Wazzup, Wazzuuup! 30-Year Anniversary Reunion Confirmed For ‘Martin’ Cast On BET+

The series defined Black culture for a generation.

There’s great news for fans of the hit 90s sitcom Martin. Taping began on Sunday (Feb. 20) for a 30-year anniversary reunion special that will air on BET+ later this year.

Comedian and actor Affion Crockett is slated to host the special, which features surviving cast members Martin Lawrence (“Martin”), Tisha Campbell (“Gina”), Tichina Arnold (“Pamela”) and Carl Anthony Payne II (“Cole”), as well as several surprise guest appearances. Thomas Mikal Ford, who played Martin’s best friend Tommy in the series, died in 2016 at the age of 52.

“To be able to sit here thirty years later with this amazing cast that has had such an impact on pop culture is truly a blessing,” Lawrence said. “I am always humbled that the fans still want more of the show and its characters. I am looking forward to the reunion special.”

Martin defined an era of Black culture, from fashion and music to movies and slang. In its own comedic way, it also showed the strong bond between three Black men and often hilarious romantic relationship and marriage of Martin and his booh, Gina.

The reunion special takes a look at the show’s origin and evolution, through interviews with the cast and original directors. It will include special musical performances, as well as behind the scenes commentary on Martin’s impact.

“Martin is one of the most beloved sitcoms in our community, both because it is hugely entertaining and because it played a pivotal role in changing the narrative of Black voices in entertainment and in culture through the portrayal of young, ambitious Black leads and healthy Black relationships,” said Scott Mills, CEO of BET.

“Decades later, that representation is still just as important, which is why we’re so excited to honor a series that put Black culture front and center on our platform that embraces Black culture every day.”

Jesse Collins Entertainment will produce the program. The Emmy-nominated production company’s credits include The New Editions Story and The Bobby Brown Story.

CEO Jesse Collins said, “Martin is one of the greatest sitcoms of all time. JCE is honored to partner with Martin and BET on such an iconic reunion.”

While waiting for the big reunion, fans can tune into BET+ to rewatch all five seasons of Martin.
