2023 NAACP Image Awards: 3 Things Serena Williams is Doing Off Court

This year’s ceremony awarded the 23-time Grand Slam champion the prestigious Jackie Robinson Sports Award.

23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams was awarded the prestigious Jackie Robinson Sports Award at the 54th Annual NAACP Image Awards for her athletic achievements, philanthropic efforts, and social justice endeavors. Actress and friend Kerry Washington presented her with the award, calling her a “goddess and inspiration.” In honor of her hard work, check out three things Williams is doing outside of sports to help those less fortunate.

  • Speaking out for gender equality

    In 2016, the athlete wrote an open letter in Porter Magazine's "Incredible Women of 2016" to speak out about gender equality and her struggles as a woman in the tennis world.

  • Serena Ventures

    In 2014, Williams founded her equity company "Serena Ventures,” which aims to help start-up companies with diverse points of view and equal the playing field for women.

  • The Yetunde Price Resource Center

    According to her official website, the Yetunde Price Resource Center was created to honor the life and memory of its namesake, who was killed by senseless violence. The Center “ensures that those affected by trauma have the resources necessary to flourish.”
