Marlon Wayans Defends ‘HIM’ After Mixed Responses
Horror fans have had plenty to feast on this year with releases like “Sinners” and “Weapons”. The latest title to arrive is “HIM”, a new project from Jordan Peele’s Monkeypaw Productions. Despite anticipation, early reviews have been mixed, with the film currently holding a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Marlon Wayans, who stars in the movie, addressed the reaction with an Instagram post that put his career in perspective. Instead of lashing out at critics, the actor shared screenshots of past projects that were met with poor reviews but went on to achieve long-lasting popularity. Among them were “White Chicks” (15%), “Scary Movie 2” (13%), and “A Haunted House” (10%).
In his caption, Wayans wrote:
“Just to be clear… I respect critics. Their job is to critique. I respect their work. It shapes our industry. But an opinion does not always mean it’s everyone’s opinion. Some movies are ahead of the curve. Innovation is not always embraced, and art is to be interpreted, and it’s subjective. I’ve had a career of making classic movies that weren’t critically received, and those movies went on to be CLASSICS. So don’t take anyone’s opinion, just go see for yourself. Love to all. Him in theaters now.”
Wayans stars in “HIM” alongside Tyriq Withers. The film follows Cameron Cade, a rising quarterback whose career spirals after a violent encounter with a fan. Wayans plays Isaiah White, Cade’s idol, who invites him to a secluded compound for training. The mentorship takes a sinister turn as White’s guidance morphs into manipulation, drawing Cade into dangerous territory.
Looking ahead, Wayans is already preparing for his next project. He confirmed that “Scary Movie 6” is on the way, set for the 2026 movie calendar, with inspiration drawn from recent horror hits like “Sinners” and “Longlegs”.
