Makaya McCraven, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Angel Bat Dawid & More to Headline the 2022 NYC Winter Jazzfest

The festival announced, “The Feel Good” as its celebratory theme.

The pandemic pressed pause on what many would’ve considered an electrified year, but thanks to the consistency of those behind a New York City staple — the 2022 Winter Jazzfest will return to form.

With 10 nights of programming in Manhattan and Brooklyn, the Winter Jazzfest will focus on celebrating Black American music with its theme, titled, “The Feel Good”.

Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and composer Angel Bat Dawid is this year’s official artist-in-residence, and will premiere a brand new work, “Afro-Town Topics: A Mythological Afrofuturist Revue”. Sun Ra Arkestra leader, Marshall Allen, will also join in on the fun, Jan. 17, at Roulette.

She’ll also lead Sistazz of the Nitty Gritty on Jan. 14, and spin a DJ set in the opening concert at City Winery.

That kickoff, co-presented by SummerStage on Jan. 13, will also feature the hallowed sounds of multiple Grammy-winner and two-time Oscar nominee, Terence Blanchard and the E-Collective with the Turtle Island Quartet; drummer, producer, and bandleader Makaya McCraven; and singer, songwriter, activist, DJ and beatsmith Georgia Anne Muldrow.

Amir ‘Questlove’ Thompson of The Roots will host a screening of his acclaimed film Summer of Soul at Roulette on Jan. 16, where an afterparty at House of Yes will feature sets by him, Madison McFerrin, and a live performance by trumpeter Maurice “Mobetta” Brown.

Also, Pino Palladino and Blake Mills will have a standalone set at Le Poisson Rouge on Jan. 18.

The NYC Winter Jazzfest will partner with BBC Radio 6 Music, whose Gilles Peterson will present as an online showcase supported by PRS Foundation. M³ (Mutual Mentorship for Musicians), co-founded by Jen Shyu and Sara Serpa, will address gender inequity and underrepresentation in creative music. Together, they’ll join 20 artists under that banner as part of the upcoming Winter Jazzfest.
