Black Panther Legacy Drama: Huey P. Newton’s Niece Slams Philly Revival as Fake
Huey P. Newton's niece, Myesha Newton, is calling out the Philly-based group, Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, as a knockoff of her uncle’s iconic Black Panther Party.
In a now viral video, she slams Paul Birdsong, the 39-year-old head of the organization based in West Philadelphia, and Myesha is not mincing words.
“My father’s name was Walter Newton,” she said in the video. “He was the brother of Huey Percy Newton, who started the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California. I got birth certificate paperwork and a whole bunch of Newtons … listen, this goes out to the Black Panther Party, the New United Black Panther Party, whoever’s out there protesting with these Somalians? I’m about to get a cease and desist order against you, and I’m about to sue you. You are not going to defame my uncle’s name like that. We’re not doing that. See you in court, b*****s.”
Earlier this month, Birdsong's group made headlines after appearing at Philly’s City Hall, in solidarity with anti-ICE protestors after agents shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis.
Sporting black berets, legal firearms, and fashioned in an all-black military-style reminiscent of the original Black Panther aesthetic, Birdsiong said they'd have prevented the tragedy.
“That wouldn’t have happened if we were there,” Birdsong said to the Philadelphia Inquirer. “Not a single person would have gotten touched.”
Rico Dukes, who calls himself Huey's biological son, says he vetted Birdsong for months, got blessings from OG Panther elders, and gave the green light.
“I had been watching him for a few months, and then I finally called him to give him my blessings and standing how the Panthers stood in 1966,” Dukes said in a video. “It’s many elders from the 1966 Panther Party that vouch for his chapter.”
Dukes dismissed Myesha's threats and argued that trademarks for the “Black Panther” name expired years ago, and said only Huey's widow, Fredrika Newton, might have a shot in her probate battle. Myesha fired back on TikTok, dangling $25K for Dukes to prove his kinship with a DNA test.
As for Birdsong’s group, Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, it’s worth noting that they exist alongside many national groups using the Black Panther Party name, including: The New Black Panther Party and The Revolutionary Black Panther Party.
