Michaela Coel Surprised Her Stylist with Met Gala Gig

The British actress and screenwriter entrusted her longtime stylist and collaborator with full creative direction of her extravagant look.

Michaela Coel was one of the co-chairs of the 2023 Met Gala. The honor is awarded to several stars who had an amazing year and Coel was joined by Penélope Cruz, Roger Federer, and Dua Lipa.

The British actress and screenwriter, who had a standout performance in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, looked stunning dripping in gold at "The Oscars of Fashion" on Monday and her look was crafted by her long-time stylist, Georgia Medley.

She told Forbes that Coel surprised her with the opportunity.

"Michaela told me about the Met in October — and although we were on the Black Panther tour at the time and I had just started to consistently work with her then — I didn’t assume it would be me to style her. I remember saying: “Well whoever is going to be on this, please make sure they’re on point.” And she [Coel] laughed at me and said: “Georgia, what are you talking about? It’s going to be you!” I screamed and we laughed and was so excited — and I started to work on it once it was announced in January!"

The theme this year was "Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” Medley said that she took inspiration from Lagerfeld's "gold chain era" with Chanel. The look was designed by Schiaparelli and featured over 135,000 crystal beads and 26,500 mixed stones, took 3,800 hours of hand embroidery by the maison’s couture workers.

"Daniel [Roseberry, Schiaparelli’s Artistic Director] and I had several meetings, and we had one fitting in Paris with Michaela and then another one 2 days prior to the Met and that was that!," Medley said.

The British stylist also holds a position at Harper's Bazaar UK. She spoke about the excitement of styling this event. I think the biggest challenge is handling the pressure and anxiety that comes with wanting to just do" the best job you could ever do, and also the expectation of others — knowing you want to just make your loved ones proud and your client beyond happy."

She added, "It’s a huge huge deal. It’s make or break. So what I loved the most about working on this project was pushing myself to do something new, fresh, and to dig deeper. I loved exploring and researching."

Other than her own look, Medley said Usher was one of her favorite looks of the night. He was styled by fellow Brit Bianca Saunders.

As for Michaela, Medley was involved in both the hair and makeup look of the night, adding, "Michaela trusts my opinion and direction, and I am heavily involved in the full look. I’ve led the creative process from start to finish, so it really has been such a blessing to be so entrusted with such a huge moment."

She also added that working with the entire team was a highlight of the night. "It was just good energy and great vibes through and through — there was this constant feeling of being at peace throughout and it just made it all the better!"
