Dwyane Wade Says No One Was Supposed To See The Iconic 'Banana Boat' Photo
Dwyane Wade recently shared how he was a part of one of the most legendary NBA photos.
During a recent appearance on Pardon My Take, Wade explained the origin story of the "Banana Boat" photo, which features him, his wife Gabrielle Union, LeBron James, and Chris Paul, taken on vacation in the Bahamas in 2015.
The Hall of Famer revealed that the photo came to be because his Union wanted to take the banana boat out onto the water. None of the NBA stars thought that photographers would capture the moment.
"My wife wanted to go on a banana boat," Wade recalled. "So, Chris Paul, Bron, and I all got on a banana boat. Now, we were in the middle of nowhere, no one was supposed to know this but us.”
"Someone took a photo from God knows where. No one was supposed to have seen us on a banana boat,” Wade continued.
Wade said that if he had known cameras were being snapped, he would have made some major changes to his style.
"First of all, if I knew they were taking a photo, we would have looked a little cooler,” Wade joked.
As the interview went on, Wade shared how everything changed when Michael Jordan showed up at the NBA’s Top 75 ceremony in 2022.
“Jordan wasn’t in that room. Actually, Jordan flew in,” Wade began. “We didn't know MJ was coming. We didn’t know who was going to be there when we took that photo in that room.”
“And that’s when MJ walked in. You’ve heard multiple stories about MJ coming in and like how he snuck in like the ‘Black Cat’ and just kind of snuck up on everybody and started talking sh*t immediately,” he added. “Right away. Right at Magic. And once again, you can go back and look at the clip, you can see my face — I was like, ‘Oh, this is happening.’”
