The King of Pop Is Back on Top: ‘Michael’ Is About to Become the Highest-Grossing Music Biopic Ever
Somebody tell “Bohemian Rhapsody” to scoot over.
“Michael,” the sweeping biopic about the life of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, is on the verge of becoming the highest-grossing music biopic in Hollywood history, according to Billboard. Released on April 24, 2026, the film has now earned approximately $846.3 million worldwide and is closing fast on “Bohemian Rhapsody's” all-time record of roughly $911 million globally. That's less than $65 million between MJ and Freddie Mercury, and the film added more than $58 million in its most recent week alone.
At this pace, pass the crown!
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, “Michael” stars Jaafar Jackson (son of Jermaine Jackson, nephew of the man himself) in his feature film debut as Michael Jackson. The casting was a calling. "I never dreamed to be an actor or even thought of playing him," Jaafar said in a red carpet interview. "But I knew it was a calling. Embodying Michael, I really had to earn the role and prove to the filmmakers that I was capable of becoming Michael."
Fuqua recognized it immediately. "There was such a spiritual connection when I first met Jaafar," the director said. "He has a natural ability to emulate Michael and such a great chemistry with the camera."
The ensemble also includes Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as MJ's attorney John Branca, and Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones.
Nearly 60% of the film's revenue has come from international markets, proving that Michael Jackson's legacy doesn't need translation. The entire world has always been and will always be his stage. The proof is in the numbers.
