Legendary R&B soul icon Erykah Badu has been teetering between hot and cold with the internet in recent months, and her latest headline controversy has landed her back on the upper end of the thermometer.

In an interview with Vulture, Fat Belly Bella discussed some of her recent controversy and her comfortableness with being the unorthodox, odd ball out, a dynamic she’s famously attached to her aesthetic, appearance and — apparently — dialogue. Insisting first that she’s “not an anti-Semitic person,” Erykah deemed herself a “humanist” and said she can pick out the good in anyone, such as notorious German Nazi leader and dictator infamously known for the genocidal Jewish Holocaust, Adolf Hitler.

“Hitler was a wonderful painter,” she expressed to interviewer David Marchese, who also happens to be Jewish. After Marchese insists against such claims, insisting that even if he did have exceptional painting skills it wouldn’t translate to any “good” in him, Erykah backtracks.

“Okay, he was a terrible painter,” she said. “Poor thing. He had a terrible childhood. That means that when I’m looking at my daughter, Mars, I could imagine her being in someone else’s home and being treated so poorly, and what that could spawn. I see things like that. I guess it’s just the Pisces in me.”

Marchese expresses to her that it’s rather “disheartening” to hear her make these comments in the current racial climate, despite her testimony that she understands the consequences they could have. 

"I don't care if the whole group says something, I’m going to be honest," she said. "I know I don’t have the most popular opinion sometimes."

And even though Erykah reassures that she understands his concern, adding that she would never intentionally hurt anyone (even “white men who believe that the Confederate flag is worth saving”), the internet’s top is already blown.
