2021 Soul Train Awards: Meet the Nominees For This Year’s “Album of the Year” Award
The nominees for the 2021 Soul Train Awards “Album of the Year” honor have all put in work despite the curve ball the pandemic has thrown at us. With having to rethink the musical creation process, when it comes to collaborating with other artists and even taking their music out on the road, the group of artists we’re about to name, did not allow any of that to stop them from putting out beautiful work.
From Jazmine Sullivan’s comeback with Heaux Tails following a more than five year hiatus from the music scene to Doja Cat’s highly anticipated Planet Her, these acts brought the sounds needed to get us through yet another year.
As we prepare for this year’s celebration of R&B and soul music, take a look below and meet those in the running for “Album of the Year”.
Blxst: No Love Lost
Though released in 2020, the 14-track project is still getting play by fans thanks to its feel-good summer anthem “Chosen” featuring Ty Dolla $ign and Tyga, making it truly a West coast affair.
Doja Cat: Planet Her
Doja, being the hot commodity that she is currently in the music business, decided to slow down on lending out features. We can only assume that extra time was put into her third album. Effortlessly flowing through hyperpop and afrobeat sounds while still giving the R&B lovers the fix they need, Doja is clearly talented and critics can’t deny her starpower.
Giveon: When It’s All Said and Done… Take Time
Whoever hurt Giveon this bad that he was inspired to write songs such as “Heartbreak Anniversary” and “Still Your Best,” shame on you, but also thank you. The California native turns sorrow and bitterness into beautiful art with this extension to his previous project, Take Time.

H.E.R.: Back of My Mind
H.E.R. released her long awaited full-length debut album and the growth, effort, and time put into making songs like “Damage” and “Come Through” is evident. This project alongside its many guest appearances proves H.E.R. has range and can hang with just about any artist on any track.
Jazmine Sullivan: Heaux Tales
Jazmine Sullivan made fans wait years for one of her most transparent and multilayered projects to date. With guest appearances from artists like Anderson .Paak and Ari Lenox, the wait was well worth it.
WizKid: Made in Lagos
This album is Wizkid’s fourth studio effort and its title couldn’t be more perfect. Reaching into his Nigerian roots, the 31-year-old really focused on the instruments and sound native to his country.
