Quinta Brunson Honored in Hometown With Key to the City and Mural at Alma Mater
Quinta Brunson is heading home.
The Emmy-winning creator and star of “Abbott Elementary” will return to her hometown on Wednesday, May 28, for a two-part celebration at her alma mater, Andrew Hamilton School in West Philadelphia.
First, Mayor Cherrelle Parker will honor the actress with the Key to the City. Then, a mural the actress helped design in partnership with Mural Arts Philadelphia will be unveiled in her name.
Titled “Blooming Futures,” and designed by local artist Athena Scott, the massive artwork wraps around the school building and tells a story of growth. It shows students as blossoming plants, with teachers and staff as the caretakers of their garden. “It’s a beautiful allegory of growth,” explained Alaina Foster, a project manager with Mural Arts. We just want to make sure she loves this.”
“I am so grateful to be receiving the key to my hometown, Philly. This city shaped me, and now I get to give back with a mural that celebrates all it gave me. I am truly honored." Brunson shared in a news release.
True to the star’s vision, the mural also features real Andrew Hamilton students and staff, including principal Dr. Torrence Rothmiller.
