Toya's New Love, and Other Second Chances
Toya's commitment to her family has been the driving force behind the first two episodes of Toya: A Family Affair. Audiences held their breath as Toya's mother entered rehab after years of drug abuse and abandonment of her children.
In the episode titled "Building a Future," Anita visits a rehab clinician who recommends that she stay at an in-patient treatment center for 30 days. As Anita rattles off the list of drugs she has used, it becomes quite clear that her addiction problem is a serious, life-threatening one. No wonder her family is overjoyed to see her finally seeking help. Inspired by her example, they promise to reunite the family in her honor.
After dropping Anita off at rehab, Toya's eldest brother Walter reveals that he's got a hidden talent as a rapper. Watch out Weezy: Walter isn't too bad behind the mic!
Meanwhile, Toya's had a rough week. Between reconciliation with her long-lost brother and taking her mother to rehab, she needs a break. Her catharsis comes in the form of a visit from her new boyfriend, Mickey "Memphitz" Wright. The two have known each other for a long time, and stayed friends through other relationships and breakups. When the pair realized that what they felt for each other was more than platonic, they decided to take the plunge.
Memphitz takes Toya on a date to the famous New Orleans restaurant Steamboat Natchez. It is the first time that the world has seen Toya and Memphitz together and the obvious chemistry that they share.
After her high-profile divorce from rapper Lil Wayne when they were both teenagers, it's refreshing to see Toya with someone who not only understands her, but is willing to make the relationship work through thick and thin. Memphitz and Toya are definitely cut from the same cloth.
Will 30 days in rehab prove to be enough to get Anita clean? What's up with Walter's rap career—can he succeed? How far is Memphitz and Toya's relationship going to go? And what does little Reginae think of him?
