Don Lemon Comes Out of the Closet

Award-winning CNN anchor Don Lemon discusses the taboos that led him to hide his sexuality, and tells Mo'Nique why he decided to come out.

In an interview taped on May 12, 2011, CNN anchor Don Lemon revealed to the public that he is gay. Now the award-winning journalist, whose accolades include an Emmy and an Edward R. Murrow award, is coming to The Mo'Nique Show to talk about the taboos that led him to hide his sexuality, and why he decided to speak his truth. He discusses his decision in his powerful new autobiography, Transparent. Mo'Nique's groundbreaking interview with Lemon will air tonight at a special time, 8P/7C.

While he has never kept his orientation a secret among his closest friends and colleagues, last week was the first time Lemon admitted his sexuality on camera. He made The Mo'Nique Show one of the first press stops on his book promotion tour because he felt it was important to come out to his Black audience first.

"I'm glad I had this opportunity to say it to Mo'Nique and to say it to the audience here because this is the audience that I was concerned about revealing this information [to]," Lemon said just after the show wrapped. "I was concerned about Black people not embracing me. That's my base, those are my people, so that's what I was worried about. I was glad to have Mo'Nique there and all of the brothers and sisters surrounding me and it just made me feel warm and it made me open up," says Lemon. "It was very emotional."

This very special episode of The Mo'Nique Show will air tonight at a special time. Tune in tonight at 8P/9C.
