Kenya Barris Set To Produce New Babyface Documentary
A Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds documentary is in the works!
Deadline has reported that “Black-Ish” creator Kenya Barris has signed on to produce it, Emmy nominee Chris Moukarbel is set to direct, and it will dig into Babyface’s career with new, personal interviews, contributions from collaborators, and never-before-seen footage from his personal archive. The documentary will also show rehearsals for his upcoming Palms residency in Las Vegas.
“I’ve often wondered how an unassuming kid from Indianapolis got to where he is today, working with artists and achieving dreams I could’ve never imagined when I first started,” said Babyface in a statement. “This documentary is giving me a chance to go down memory lane with a fine-tooth comb, reexamining the highs and lows of my life and career. I’m discovering where all the songs really came from — and perhaps just as important, the how and why.”
In a statement, Barris added he hopes the film “gives people a glimpse into the man behind the musical genius, who just might be one of the funniest motherf***ers I’ve ever met.” Barris also said that Babyface is a culture-defining hitmaker whose impact cannot be denied or overstated.
Over his career, Babyface has won 13 Grammys (including four Producer of the Year awards), co-founded LaFace Records with L.A. Reid, and has shaped hits for Whitney Houston, Toni Braxton, Madonna, SZA, and so many more faves. This documentary plans to map that influence with intimate access and archival context. In other words, it’s gonna be good!
