SZA Breaks Mary J. Blige’s Almost 20-Year Chart Record As ‘SOS’ Goes Double Platinum

The December 2022 project sold two million units in its first four months.

The fabled sophomore slump appears to be mere folklore, as r&b sensation SZA soars to new heights with her second studio album, SOS. This captivating 23-track musical odyssey, unleashed in December 2022, has dethroned Mary J. Blige's record established more than a decade and a half ago.

Basking in its 16th consecutive week atop the Billboard 200 chart, the TDE songstress's electrifying hit, "Kill Bill," has now been crowned the longest-running No. 1 single by a female solo artist. This prestigious title was previously held by the undisputed Queen of Hip Hop and R&B in 2006 for her chart-topping anthem, "Be Without You," masterfully crafted by renowned producer Bryan Michael Cox for Blige's seventh studio album, The Breakthrough. The song ultimately reigned supreme for an impressive 15-week stretch.

In addition, SOS also reached double platinum status from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) after reportedly selling two million units in its first four months and roughly two months after getting the platinum plaque. The 33-year-old also received 12 additional certifications, including five platinum certifications and seven gold.

SZA took SOS on the road last February for a sold-out tour across 17 cities. The “Love Language” singer recently announced that she would extend her S.O.S. tour with ten new stops in Europe and 21 additional shows across North America.

The European shows will start on June 1 at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome before wrapping up at Dublin’s 3Arena on June 21. The entertainer will return to North America with her first show on September 20 at Miami’s Kaseya Center and continues with stops in Brooklyn, Houston, Los Angeles, and several other locations before her final performance at Phoenix’s Footprint Center on October 29.
