Music Pioneer Sly and the Family Stone Gave Us Legendary Anthems
Sly Stone, the frontman for the band Sly and the Family Stone, passed away on Monday, June 9th. He was 82 years old. He reportedly succumbed to a battle with COPD and other health issues. Legendary funk bassist Bootsy Collins once called Sly Stone "the most talented musician I know." In the late 60s and throughout the 70s, the music of Sly & The Family Stone topped the music charts giving us rock, pop, and social anthems.
One of the band’s most impactful projects, “Stand!” was released in 1969. Anthems such as “Everyday People,” “Sing a Simple Song” and the classic “I Want to Take You Higher” came from that iconic album. At Woodstock, that year, Sly & The Family Stone gave a memorable performance that has been said to solidify the music pioneer and his band as legends.
