Tupac Biopic Gets Handed Down to Yet Another Director

A third filmmaker to take on the doomed project.

'Round and 'round, 'round we go...the ill-fated Tupac biopic is changing hands again. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Benny Boom is in talks to take over the long-awaited film just months after Carl Franklin was brought on board.
It's not clear what caused Franklin's departure. The Devil in a Blue Dress director joined the project in April after Boyz n the Hood helmer John Singleton exited on bad terms. “Real talk! The reason I am not making this picture is because the people involved aren’t really respectful of the legacy of Tupac Amaru Shakur,” he wrote at the time. “Tupac was much more than a hip hop artist … He was a Black man guided by his passions,” Singleton added. "Of most importance was his love of Black people and culture … Something the people involved in this movie know nothing about."
As for Benny Boom, he is best known as a music video director who has worked with artists like Nicki Minaj, Ciara and Jennifer Lopez.
The game of musical chairs with directors isn't the only problem the project faces. There is also a lawsuit hanging over the project, with one group of producers suing another for not seeking the required approvals and permissions over casting and other creative decisions.
While we will hand it to the production company, Morgan Creek, for never giving up, we'll be very surprised if we see the film go into production this decade. For now, if you want to reflect back on 'Pac's music and influence, watch our tribute to the late West Coast rapper below:
