Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming’ Re-Enters The Netflix Top 10

Social media-driven re-watches pushed the former first lady’s documentary back into Netflix’s daily rankings and a surprising category change raised eyebrows.

Our forever first lady is always relevant.

Nearly six years after it premiered, Michelle Obama’s 2020 Higher Ground documentary “Becoming” is back in Netflix’s top watches.

The film, which follows the former first lady on a 34-city tour supporting her bestselling memoir, re-entered Netflix’s U.S. Top 10 movies over the weekend and was reported at No. 6 on Monday, Feb. 2, after first appearing at No. 8.

But the comeback came with a wrinkle: reporters and users on Threads noted Netflix appeared to recategorize “Becoming” into its Kids section, where it showed in the U.S. Kids Top 10 — a change that forced some viewers to dig into the Kids charts to find the film. That recategorization raised questions about how platform metadata and chart organization affect who sees a title and when. Industry trackers and social posts show snapshots of the film on various Netflix lists at different times, proving how placement can change rapidly across charts and regions.

The documentary’s comeback also puts fresh attention on the source material: Obama’s 2018 memoir of the same name, “Becoming,” which remains one of the decade’s best-selling nonfiction books.

Netflix engagement data shows steady interest for the film across recent years, and the social push this month turned that steady engagement into a spike that landed “Becoming” back in viewers’ feeds. Whether audiences find it on the main movie chart or tucked into a kids list, the moment reinforces the enduring cultural reach of a first lady like Michelle Obama.

Meanwhile, Amazon’s “Melania” documentary opened theatrically to underwhelming buzz and is expected to lose over $70M at the box office.
