Giannis Antetokounmpo Makes History With New Deal To Stay With Milwaukee Bucks
Giannis Antetokounmpo just signed the biggest deal in NBA history.
According to The Athletic, the NBA superstar signed a five-year supermax deal worth $228.2 million on Tuesday (December 15) to stay with the Milwaukee Bucks.
Including a final year on his current contract, Antetokounmpo will reportedly earn $256 million over the next six seasons. Antetokounmpo's agent Alex Saratsis told ESPN that the deal includes a player opt-out option after year four.
Giannis has since released a statement saying he’s happy to remain with the team that drafted him. "This is my home, this is my city," the 26-year-old posted on social media Tuesday. "I'm blessed to be able to be a part of the Milwaukee Bucks for the next 5 years. Let's make these years count. The show goes on, let's get it."
Had a deal not gotten done, Antetokounmpo would’ve entered next summer as an unrestricted free agent.
There had been some speculation that Giannis could’ve left Milwaukee due to the team’s first round exit during the 2020 NBA Playoffs.
Antetokounmpo won the NBA's Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2020. It’s a feat only accomplished by Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon. He also had a career best average in points (29.5 points per game) and rebounds (13.6 rebounds per game) while dishing out 5.6 assists.
