That Mexican OT Defends Use of N-Word on Lip Service Podcast

The Texas rapper says he’s not afraid of being canceled and points to his upbringing as the reason he uses the word.

Cultural lines and comfort zones were tested when That Mexican OT sat down with the hosts of "Lip Service." The Texas-born rapper joined Angela Yee, Gigi Maguire, Jordan Emanuel, and Cleotrapa for a new episode, where the topic of his use of the N-word quickly turned into a moment.

Angela Yee brought up how many artists move carefully in today’s climate. But when asked whether he’s ever felt the pressure to filter his language, That Mexican OT didn’t flinch. He said he couldn’t be canceled because he didn’t “sell [his] music,” he sold himself. According to him, fans know who he is, accept it, and support him anyway.

When Cleotrapa asked directly if he felt like he could use the N-word, That Mexican OT said yes but not because he’s a rapper. He pointed to his upbringing in the South and the people around him growing up. “I grew up loving these motherf**ers,” he said. “Fighting with them, eating with them, doing bad sh** with them.”

He also claimed to have Black relatives and said that even if he didn’t, he was surrounded by Black culture throughout his childhood. He added that there’s no hate behind his use of the word and that it’s what he knows.

Still, he acknowledged the pushback. He said he understands why many people are offended by the word, no matter who’s saying it. But his position didn’t change: “If you’re from where I’m from… what the f*** are you gonna do about it?”

That Mexican OT made it clear that he’s aware of the conversation, but has no interest in adjusting his language or backing down from this controversial conversation.
