Jacksonville Mom of 4 Missing for 40+ Days, Family Demands Answers

Kamela Johnson was last seen heading to a gas station on Oct. 8 and relatives say a string of strange texts deepened their fears.

A Jacksonville mother of four has been missing for more than 40 days after she was last seen heading to a neighborhood gas station, and her family is begging for answers.

Thirty-two-year-old Kamela Johnson was last seen by her husband, Darrell Johnson, on Oct. 8 and was most likely headed to Gate gas station at 5508 Moncrief Road, according to police records and reports. Darrell filed a missing person report on Oct. 16 when Kamela did not return.

Family members describe the missing 32-year-old as someone who always checked in and they’re calling her current silence deeply unusual. “She has never, ever disappeared before. She has never not tried to reach out to family," Sharonda Muller, Kamela’s mother, told People. Muller also shared Kamela’s kids, aged 6-11, are asking questions as relatives scramble for any information.

Suspicion grew after Kamela’s ex-boyfriend, Jeremy Womack received texts on Oct. 16 from a strange number claiming to be her. Womack said he never got a response when he asked for the sender’s identity. Investigators later traced the number to two people who “appear to have no connection to Kamela,” according to the sheriff’s report.

Muller told People the family is frustrated with the limits of the police response. “As far as the local police, because she is an adult and she didn't have any issues with mental illness, they're basically just saying that she has free will,” she said.

Kamela’s mom also mentioned that Kamela being gone for a few days was never odd because she would check in and she wouldn’t go farther than her regular spots. Muller added that Darrell was Kamela’s “home base.”

Muller described her daughter as “a very sweet person,” who dreamed of working with children and excelled in school. While drugs impacted her life, Kamela loves her kids, her mom said.

The family is organizing a search party for Nov. 22 and urges anyone with information to contact the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office at 904-630-0500.

“I mean if she's out there and someone has her, we want her back,” Muller added.
