Chris Paul Hints That Retirement Is Near

After 19 years in the NBA, Paul’s legendary career is coming to a close.

Chris Paul may be retiring from the NBA very soon.

Speaking with Jemele Hill at the American Black Film Festival, the legendary point guard recently revealed that his impending retirement is near.

"At the most, a year," Paul said when asked by Hill if he's close to retiring. "I just finished my 20th season, which is a blessing in itself. I've been in the NBA for more than half of my life, which is a blessing. But these years, you do not get back with your kids, with your family."

"Obviously, I got a lot of homies, friends that have retired or whatnot. And they are always like, 'Man, play as long as you possibly can. Play as long as you possibly can.' And I appreciate that. But I also, I just always want to talk to my kids about it because that's the most important job that I have,” he continued. “I love to play. I definitely love my kids and my family more than I like to play. Anybody who's in this knows the sacrifice could goes longer. I said this summer I will evaluate it and talk to my family about it."

Last year with the San Antonio Spurs, he started all 82 games and put up 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 1.3 steals per game.

At 40 years old, Paul is the third-oldest player in the league behind LeBron James and P.J. Tucker.

This is not the first time Paul has spoken candidly about the end of the NBA season. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show in June,  he said he wanted to be close to his family on the West Coast.

"My son just turned 16," he said. "My daughter is 12. The past six seasons, I've lived without them. I go to San Antonio, Phoenix, Golden State—they were in Houston with me, Oklahoma City… I've been around a few teams, but I've been away from them for the last six years. It's a little different. That's the conversation."

So far this postseason, Paul has yet to sign with a team. NBA insider Marc Stein reported Sunday (July 6)  that he turned down offers from the Charlotte Hornets and the Dallas Mavericks. Stein also revealed that Paul has had serious talks with the Milwaukee Bucks.
