Family Members Among Five Charged in Detroit Kidnapping, Murder Plot
Federal prosecutors have charged five people—including relatives—in what they describe as a conspiracy to kidnap, rob, and kill Curtis Dixon, a Detroit man who recently received more than $100,000 in donations after going viral for a good deed.
According to a 27-page complaint filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan obtained by Fox 2 News, Dixon, identified as Victim 1, was ambushed, beaten, tied up, and driven to multiple locations where he was forced to withdraw cash. His wife, identified as Victim 2, was also targeted during a home invasion.
The suspects are Roland Terrell Chatmon, Dnequia Stroman, Ieasha Ann Stroman, Leica Doreen Lopez Martinez, and Kenneth Paul Anderson. Chatmon is Dixon’s nephew, as pointed out in the complaint documents. Investigators said the scheme began after Chatmon learned of Dixon’s viral windfall. In a recorded jail call, Chatmon told his brother, “I said that ***** better not make me turn a hustle.”
On September 1, police say Dixon was lured by Lopez Martinez, who asked him for a ride. Once he stopped, Dixon was ambushed. His hands and feet were bound, a shirt was placed over his head, and the suspects threatened to kill his wife if he didn’t give them money. Dixon was driven to ATMs, his home, and eventually left near his GMC Yukon Denali, which was on fire when authorities arrived at the scene. Witnesses pulled him from the burning vehicle.
Cell phone data and surveillance footage from gas stations and banks were used to track the suspects. On September 25, federal agents executed search warrants, recovering drugs, guns, and items from Dixon’s stolen safe.
Dixon became known nationally in August after helping a stranger, actually influencer Zach Dereniowski, who rewarded him with cash, a car, and support from a crowdfunding campaign.
No court date has been set for the suspects.
