Megan Thee Stallion Brings Her Hits to 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical'

The Grammy-winning rapper takes on the role of Zidler while bringing hits like “Savage” to the stage, marking a bold crossover between hip-hop and Broadway’s biggest spectacle.

Megan Thee Stallion is officially bringing her signature swagger to Broadway.

The Grammy-winning rapper has joined the cast of Moulin Rouge! The Musical while also introducing her chart-topping hits into the production, marking a major crossover moment between hip-hop and one of Broadway’s most extravagant shows. Her limited engagement began March 24 at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in New York and will run for eight weeks.

Best known for anthems like “Savage,” “Body,” and “WAP,” Megan is not only contributing her music to the jukebox-style musical, but also stepping into the role of Harold Zidler—the charismatic emcee of the famed Parisian nightclub. In doing so, she becomes the first woman to play the role in any production of Moulin Rouge!, adding a modern, gender-flipped twist to the Tony Award-winning show.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film, has built its reputation on blending contemporary music with a lavish, turn-of-the-century Parisian setting. The production features a mashup of songs spanning decades, and Megan’s addition signals a continued push toward more current, culturally relevant sounds. Her music is incorporated into select moments of the show, including the high-energy curtain call, giving audiences a distinctly modern finale.

The Houston native’s arrival on Broadway represents another milestone in a career defined by genre-blending and cultural impact. Since breaking through with viral freestyles and mixtapes, Megan has gone on to win multiple Grammy Awards and establish herself as one of the most influential voices in contemporary hip-hop. Her confident, unapologetic persona—often centered around themes of empowerment and self-expression—aligns naturally with Moulin Rouge!’s larger-than-life tone.

Her casting also reflects a broader shift within Broadway, as productions increasingly look to bridge the gap between theater and mainstream music. While hip-hop has long influenced stage productions, artists of Megan’s caliber rarely step directly into principal roles in major Broadway shows.

The timing of her debut is also notable. Moulin Rouge! The Musical is approaching the end of its Broadway run later this year, making Megan’s appearance a high-profile moment during the show’s final stretch. Her involvement is expected to draw new audiences to the theater, particularly younger fans and those who may not typically attend Broadway productions.

For Megan, the role offers an opportunity to showcase a different side of her artistry—one that extends beyond recording studios and festival stages into live theater performance. For Broadway, it’s a reminder of the evolving landscape of entertainment, where traditional boundaries between genres continue to blur.

As Megan Thee Stallion takes center stage in Moulin Rouge!, the result is more than a casting headline—it’s a reflection of where both hip-hop and theater are headed next.
