Jussie Smollett Announces Engagement to Jabari Redd
Jussie Smollett is officially off the market. The actor and filmmaker shared on Instagram that he proposed to his longtime partner Jabari Redd, and Redd said yes. The post, uploaded over the weekend, includes a carousel of rooftop photos where Smollett is seen on one knee with Redd standing in front of him, visibly caught off guard and smiling. “I’ll be spending my birthday with my Fiancé… He said YES,” Smollett wrote in the caption.
Reactions poured in immediately. Smollett’s siblings were among the first to comment. Jurnee Smollett posted, “Screaming with tears of joy! My whole heart loves both of you, @jussiesmollett. Welcome to the family @jabariredd.” Jazz Smollett added, “Yaaaass!!! Welcome to the family, Jabari!!! Love y’all!! Sooooo happy for you both!” Friends and collaborators like Robert Glasper, Amber Riley, Durand Bernarr, and "Empire" executive producer Lee Daniels also sent their congratulations.
Smollett and Redd have kept most of their relationship private, but they’ve occasionally shared moments together online since 2022. In 2023, they appeared in "The Lost Holiday," a holiday film produced by Smollett alongside Tressa Azarel Smallwood and Mona Scott-Young. The film, which starred Vivica A. Fox, was part of Smollett’s ongoing work behind the scenes under his company, SuperMassive.
Redd is a creative director who has worked across music, visual art, and digital storytelling. He’s also been involved in various independent film and branding projects and has appeared alongside Smollett at select public events.
Smollett, best known for his role as Jamal Lyon on Fox’s "Empire," has been slowly re-emerging in the entertainment space through indie film and music after a period of relative quiet. The couple hasn’t released any further details about their upcoming wedding.
