Girlfriend of Fugitive Murderer Derrick Groves Arrested in New Orleans
The girlfriend of Derrick Groves, an escaped New Orleans inmate, has been arrested.
According to reports, U.S. Marshals have taken Darriana Burton, 28, into custody after determining she played a role in aiding Groves’ breakout and transport away from the prison.
Groves is still at large after being one of 10 inmates to escape on May 12. All but Groves and one other inmate, Antoine Massey, remain on the run.
"Burton is believed to be the current girlfriend of Derrick Groves," the attorney general's office said in a statement. "We have confirmed they were in an on-again, off-again relationship for three years."
The officials say the two exchanged messages and video calls through SmartCon, a messaging platform used by inmates; it is speculated that the pair helped coordinate logistics around the escape and pulled the caper off the night of the breakout.
Authorities also claimed on May 14, two days before the getaway, Groves FaceTimed Burton and an unknown man. While specific details weren’t shared due to the call being recorded, it is believed that the trio further planned his escape during the conversation.
WDSU reports that according to legal documents, the follow-up call was intended to provide more details regarding the escape, including timing, transportation, and the unknown man's expected role in assisting once Groves was outside the facility.
