Talladega College Celebrates Graduation with Historic Donation
On May 4, 2025, award-winning actress and philanthropist S. Epatha Merkerson delivered the keynote address at Talladega College's 150th Commencement Ceremony. During her speech, she announced a generous $1 million donation to the institution.
Expressing her admiration for the college's legacy, Merkerson shared, "I came down [to Talladega] and met some wonderful people who embraced me immediately. I felt at home, and I love what this college has done for over 150 years."
In recognition of her contributions to the arts and her philanthropic efforts, Talladega College conferred upon Merkerson an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.
Rica Lewis-Payton, Chair of Talladega’s Board of Trustees, remarked, "This transformative gift from S. Epatha Merkerson sets a powerful example of philanthropy and will have a profound impact on Talladega College. It ensures that this institution remains a beacon of light in the community that fosters the development of future leaders for generations to come."
Beyond her acclaimed roles in television and film, Merkerson is actively involved in advocacy work, supporting causes such as diabetes awareness, cancer prevention, and tobacco-free initiatives. She has been recognized for her service to organizations such as Shaping Her Earth (SHE) and Step Up, both of which are dedicated to mentoring young women.
