Victoria Monét Opens Up About Her PCOS Diagnosis and Finally Getting Answers
Victoria Monét is using her platform to shine a light on women’s health, especially the kind of health concerns that can go undetected for years.
In a new interview with SiriusXM, the Grammy-winning singer revealed that she was recently diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, or PCOS, and said she had never been told about the condition during previous gynecology appointments.
“I hadn’t heard about it in all my gynecology appointments,” Monét said, explaining that it was only after seeing Dr. Thaïs Aliabadi that she finally got answers about what was happening in her body. Monét said the doctor showed her ultrasounds that revealed “literal cysts” on her ovaries, which helped explain why she experienced difficulty getting pregnant earlier in life.
“I had been in really long relationships where, quite candidly, that we weren’t using protection and I never got pregnant until my big age,” Monét revealed.
The singer also pointed out how little many women know about PCOS, even though the condition affects about one in 10 women of childbearing age. Black women with PCOS may experience more severe symptoms, making awareness and diagnosis especially important. Monét said symptoms such as weight gain, excessive hair growth, and reproductive challenges can all be connected to the condition, yet many women still have no idea what PCOS is or how it affects the body. “There’s a lot of people and women operating in the world that have no idea what those letters mean,” she said.
Monét has joined a growing wave of Black women in entertainment speaking openly about reproductive health, a conversation that has also included stars like Lori Harvey and Keke Palmer. Monét believes more women deserve information, answers, and care that takes their symptoms seriously, so she’s sharing her story.
