2021 Soul Train Awards: 5 Things We Love About ‘Best R&B/Soul Female Artist’ Nominee Jazmine Sullivan
Although it had been a while since Jazmine Sullivan blessed her fans with a proper studio project, when the Grammy-nominated singer finally returned to the spotlight, with her she brought Heaux Tales, a multilayered masterpiece that would sonically redefine how we viewed the term “hoe.”
The 14-track project features several of our Soul Train favorites like H.E.R., Ari Lennox, and Anderson .Paak. The album also rightfully earned the singer several award noms including the 2021 Soul Train Awards nomination for “Best R&B/Soul Female Artist'' and “Album of the Year.” Ahead of the musical celebration take a look at five reasons why we love Jazmine.
She’s rooted in music
Jazmine’s talents prove the apple didn’t fall far from the tree in her case. The Philly native grew up with a musician mother who worked as a backup singer for Philadelphia International Record. Her mom’s work inspired her to enroll as a vocal music major at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
She’s fearless with her lyrics
With projects like Heaux Tales or even her 2015 effort, Reality Show, Jazmine has never been afraid to tackle the good, bad, and the ugly parts of relationships and life.
She doesn’t follow trends
The singer-songwriter is in a lane of her own thanks to her conscious effort to stay true to her unique R&B and soul sound despite what popular musical trends are hitting the airwaves. So, don’t expect to see any TikTok dances tagging alongside these records.

She’s strategic in how she releases music
In a world where art forms are consumed, directed, and discarded in the matter of months, if not days, Jazmine doesn’t rush to put out projects just to please the masses. There’s a six year gap between her last two albums and a five year difference between her sophomore album and third studio project Love Me Back.
Her pen game is top-tier
Apart from writing hits for herself, Jazmine has also written for other singers including Jennifer Hudson, Tamia, Monica, Fantasia, and Christina Milian for her song “Say I.” When she’s not writing a banging track, she’s teaching others cool vocal tricks.
