Ziggy Marley Talks Woody Harrelson, Dad’s Legacy And Ganja
Ziggy Marley has recently released a new album called Wild and Free and in an interview with Us Magazine, the reggae star candidly reflects on the marijuana argument, trying to outdo his dad and why actor Woody Harrelson is on the opening of his album.
According to Marley, Woody Harrleson is his grandmother’s friend and has been an extension of the family for a long time. One creative day, while he was writing a song, Marley says he invited Harrelson to sing with him, saying, “Woody has a soulful voice and so I said, 'you know, you got to be on the record.' He was like 'Ah, cool lets go.' So we just did it like that…It was spontaneous.” For some reason, it’s not difficult to imagine the Friends With Benefits star hanging out with the most famous reggae family ever.
Regarding the plant many reggae artists live for, the multi-Grammy winning musician had choice words for anti-marijuana campaigners, along with the alcohol, tobacco and pharmaceutical industries. He says, “The argument against marijuana is confusing and hypocritical and stupid.” He created a comic book hero called “Marijuana Man,” who he describes as a next generation superhero, similar to the Green Lantern and Superman.
Speaking of super heroes, the Melody Makers’ glue explains how at 42, comparing himself to his father is irrelevant. He notes they are different people and he would never want to ruin the great relationship he had with his legendary dad by thinking of him as competition. Thirty years after his father's death, Ziggy's producing a documentary that "will also show the emotional side of our father." He expects it will be out this fall.
