Nearly three years after a police officer shot and killed Ramarley Graham at his home in the Bronx, New York, the family has agreed to accept a $3.9 million settlement from the city in a wrongful death lawsuit. 
“This was a tragic case," City Law Department spokesman Nick Paolucci said, according to the Daily News. "After evaluating all the facts, and consulting with key stakeholders such as the NYPD, it was determined that settling the matter was in the best interest of the City.”
Graham was unarmed when Richard Haste, an undercover narcotics officer, followed Graham and busted in his home after he said he saw the 18-year-old purchase marijuana on the street. Graham was shot in the bathroom, where he was allegedly trying to flush the substance down the toilet. 

The payment will be divided among family members, and $2.95 million will go to Graham's estate. Graham's brother will receive $500,000 and his grandmother will pocket $450,000 because they were both in the home when he was shot. Constance Malcolm, Graham's mother, will receive $40,000, the Daily News reports. Haste will not pay anything in this settlement.
Haste has not faced a trial for the death since both of his indictments have been dismissed by grand juries. In August 2013, the Justice Department announced that it would be reviewing the case, but the family says there has been no indication that there was a full investigation opened.
Graham's name has been often cited as one of many victims of police misconduct and racially motivated crimes in recent national protests against the killings of Blacks by law enforcement.
