For the first time in its history, retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will have a woman and African-American leading the corporation's three businesses, Reuters reports. Rosalind Brewer, 49, will serve as president and chief executive officer of Sam's Club warehouse retail chain.
Brewer, a Spelman College graduate, joined Wal-Mart as a regional vice president in 2006 and went on to head its U.S. East Coast operations, where she oversaw more than $100 million in revenue a year, more than 500,000 employees, and nearly 1,600 stores. In her new role starting Feb. 1, Brewer will oversee Sam's Club's 610 stores, which brought in $49 billion last year.
Brewer's appointment, along with promotions for two other women, comes after Wal-Mart won a U.S. Supreme Court decision when the court rejected a lawsuit by women who claimed the company denied them promotions and raises because of their gender.
