Lizzo Warns Fans to Not Become Famous: ‘You Can’t Leave’
Although she’s famous, Lizzo considers herself to still be “normal.”
The “Still Bad” vocalist has a sit-down interview with Ziwe, which was posted on YouTube on May 8. Around the four-minute mark of the video below, Lizzo joked, “I don’t have any friends” before detailing why she’s lost some.
“I used to have so many,” the musician said. “You get famous and then it gets weird… Everyone makes it weird for famous people.”
“I’m still a normal person,” Lizzo continued. “You’re still you. Everything around you changes. That’s fame in a nutshell and people change, too. It’s heartbreaking.”
Lizzo then shared an ‘Anti-Fame’ PSA, warning fans against becoming public figures. “Don’t be famous,” she told viewers. I know you guys want to be, and I know you want to go online, go viral, get your money, and be rich.”
Lizzo explained that “Rich and famous are not the same thing.” “If you’re an artist, do your art, but don’t just be famous. You can’t leave. It never ends,” she concluded.
Amid legal trouble with three of her former backup dancers, Lizzo faced the difficulties of being in the public eye, and admitted during a concert in March that she was once in a “dark, deep depression.”
“I was so heartbroken by the world and so deeply hurt that I didn’t want to live anymore, and I was so deeply afraid of people that I didn’t want to be seen. Eventually, I got over that fear,” she told the crowd.
