3 Southern University Marching Band Students Tragically Killed While Changing Flat Tire

‘I am at a loss for words and utterly devastated,’ the Human Jukebox’s band director says.

Southern University is mourning the tragic deaths of three members of the HBCU’s marching band, known as the “Human Jukebox.”

Louisiana State police said an 18-wheeler truck crashed into the students while they were trying to change a flat tire Tuesday night (Dec. 6) on a highway in the Natchitoches area, CBS News Reports.

The students were in a stalled 1999 Jeep Laredo on a shoulder of I-49 northbound at about 7:40 p.m. when the truck drifted onto the shoulder and hit the Jeep’s left side and the victims. They were pronounced dead on the scene.

Southern University President-Chancellor Dennis Shields offered condolences.

“Our thoughts are with the families, friends, classmates and other loved ones of Broderick Moore, a freshman majoring in music from Cedar Hill, Texas; Dylan Young, a sophomore majoring in mechanical engineering from Cedar Hill; and Tyran Williams, a freshman majoring in music from Irving, Texas,” Shields wrote in a statement posted on Facebook.

WAFB identified the truck driver as Clyde Gay, 62, of Coushatta, La. He was wearing a seatbelt and sustained no injuries. Results of routine toxicology tests are pending in the ongoing investigation.

“I am at a loss for words and utterly devastated to hear the news that three of my band members lost their lives in a vehicle collision Tuesday night,” wrote Southern’s Director of bands Kedric Taylor.

He added that they “were some of the most promising, humble and talented student musicians I’ve had the pleasure of instructing.”

A tribute ceremony honoring the three students is scheduled for Dec. 11. at 4 p.m. on the lawn of the Isaac Greggs Band Hall.
