Joey Bada$$ & Patina Miller on 'Raising Kanan' Season 4, Power Plays, and Personal Growth
The Power Universe continues to dominate television with its gripping storytelling, dynamic characters, and a world where loyalty and survival mean everything. Now, as Power Book III: Raising Kanan enters its highly anticipated fourth season, fans can expect even more twists, betrayals, and power plays that have made the series a cultural phenomenon.
This season, the Thomas family appears to have turned over a new leaf—but in Southside Jamaica, Queens, the past never stays buried for long. With Unique (Joey Bada$$) more dangerous than ever and seeking revenge, Kanan and his family must confront who they truly are and whether they can escape the inevitable.
Off-screen, Joey Bada$$ is also embracing a new chapter in his personal life as he prepares to welcome a child with actress and singer Serayah. As he balances fatherhood and his evolving acting career, his presence in Raising Kanan remains a commanding force. With the Power Universe consistently proving why it’s one of television’s most thrilling franchises, Season 4 promises to raise the stakes like never before.
Miller’s portrayal of Raquel “Raq” Thomas in Raising Kanan has always been defined by strength, strategy, and an unwavering sense of control. But as the show enters its fourth season, a softer, more vulnerable side of Raq begins to emerge—one shaped by a deeply personal and traumatic experience that takes a toll in ways even she can’t fully prepare for.
For Miller, this evolution is especially important for women watching Raq’s journey unfold.
"I want women to keep in mind that this is her decision—that’s the takeaway," she emphasizes. "So many women find themselves in situations where outside noise interferes with what they truly want. But at the end of the day, you have to do what’s right for you. Raq has always been someone who does what needs to be done, no matter how hard it is. Seeing her navigate something like this, in a way that allows her softness to come through, makes her human. We’re all human. And I think that’s what makes this storyline so powerful—so many women will see themselves in it."
That humanity extends beyond her personal struggles. Raq’s signature style continues to exude power, confidence, and a touch of nostalgia that feels straight out of a ‘90s hip-hop video. From sleek, structured coats to thigh-high boots giving serious Mary J. Blige energy, her wardrobe is as much a character as she is. So if Miller could raid any closet from the ‘90s, whose would it be?
"Janet [Jackson] has always been that girl," she says without hesitation. "I’ve always loved what she wore—so confident, so sexy, and so creative with her style. She knew exactly who she was. As for today? Honestly, style is personal. I love and appreciate fashion from so many people, but I’d rather just make my own lane."
While Raq wrestles with her internal battles, Unique—played by Joey Bada$$—is facing demons of his own this season. Betrayal has turned his world upside down, and with his mind clouded by a severe brain injury, he’s struggling to separate truth from illusion.
"Right now, Unique is in a downward spiral," Bada$$ explains. "From the first couple of episodes, it’s clear he’s suffered a brain injury—his mind is scrambled. He doesn’t know up from down, and it’s gonna take time for him to piece things together. In his head, everyone conspired against him. He can’t accept that his brother was just a piece of sh*t who wanted his spot. And then there’s Raq—who went from being an adversary to a lover. Now, he’s questioning everything. Were they all just trying to move him out of the way? He’s seeing red, and that’s a dangerous place for him to be. But I think we just have to stay tuned to see how it all plays out."
Off-screen, however, Bada$$ is stepping into a very different role—fatherhood. As he prepares to welcome a child with Serayah, he reflects on the new chapter ahead.
"Fatherhood is always a humbling experience," he says. "But I’m really looking forward to the partnership. We already have such an amazing relationship, so I can’t wait to see how we apply that to raising a child together."
With the Power Universe continuing to expand and evolve, Raising Kanan proves that even in a world where survival is everything, growth—and the choices that come with it—are just as powerful as the streets themselves.
