Mary J. Blige Reveals The Daily Affirmations That Helped Build Her Self-Confidence, And It’s Absolutely Worth Repeating!

The music icon says it all starts with being kind to yourself.

Mary J. Blige just revealed her secret to building self-confidence, and it all starts with being kind to yourself. While chatting with ELLE the music superstar spoke candidly about a wide range of topics, including how she turns to positive self-talk to build up her confidence.

According to the trailblazer, it all starts with acknowledging your natural beauty, even if others constantly put you down. “When I was married, I was feeling so low. I had to pay myself the highest compliments, even if I didn’t believe it, just so I could build myself up,” Blige told the magazine. “I would do it in the morning because that's the time when your hair is not done and you don't have on makeup. You're just kind of dealing with yourself for real.”

To combat negative thoughts from others, Blige starts every day with the following affirmation in the morning: “Good morning, Gorgeous. I love you. I got you. I need you.”

During the deep conversation, Blige went on to sadly reveal that she “didn’t feel beautiful” until 2016. Serving as our fashion and beauty inspiration for decades, it is hard to believe that the 51-year-old beauty ever experienced issues with self-esteem. She’s literally an icon for millions!

“It’s not just the hairstyles and the clothing and the skin,” she explains about her lifestyle transformation that goes far beyond cosmetics. “It’s how I reinvent myself through trials and perseverance. Am I going to quit? No, I’m going to go to the next level. It’s painful to go to the next level because change is hard. But people see me come out and they think, ‘It’s just her skin or her hair.’ No, it’s her. It’s me. I’m really choosing to be a better, stronger person.”
