TDE President Terrence “Punch” Henderson Defends Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Performance

“Since when did we want to fit in with the mainstream?” Henderson asked on X.

Top Dawg Entertainment president Terrence “Punch” Henderson had time to address critics of Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl LIX halftime show on Wednesday, February 12.

Following the star-studded performance on Sunday, February 9, some Super Bowl viewers came to social media with some hot takes about the concert, even claiming that the crowds’ cheers weren’t as loud as they were depicted on television. One person with that opinion was popular Twitch streamer Kai Cenat, who revisited the halftime performance during a stream this week.

“Oh my God, they added sound effects to the NFL sh**. Oh my f****** God! So right here, there was no sound,” Cenat claimed. “On my life, right here, there was no sounds.”

He added that the cheers happened when Kendrick began performing, along with the special appearances from Samuel L. Jackson and SZA, and when the “GNX” rapper performed “Not Like Us.”

But while TDE manager HWOOD responded to Cenat via Instagram, claiming that the streamer was only mad that he couldn’t enter Kendrick’s Super Bowl suite, Henderson defended his former TDE artist without naming any names.

“Seeing all of the commentary surrounding the Super Bowl performance, it’s showing that we lost sight of what we’ve always fought for… to be who WE ARE as artist of Hip Hop Culture. Since when did we want to fit in with the mainstream?? lol.”

He continued, “Sure we want the mainstream platforms, but only to do US. Authentically us. That’s what always made Hip Hop so appealing.”

While Kendrick departed TDE in 2022 for pgLang, the label he co-founded with Dave Free, the Compton native remains close to his former label associates. In April, he’ll begin the Grand National Tour with TDE artist SZA, who Henderson manages.
