Jussie Smollett Opens Up About Navigating Public Judgment Years Later
It’s been a rough road for Jussie Smollett the past few years, and the actor shares he still struggles with interactions to this day.
In an interview with Variety, the 43-year-old shared he feels “insecure” when meeting people for the first time.
“I’m still insecure when I meet people for the first time,” he told the outlet.
“I don’t know if they are coming into the room thinking that I’m this trash person who did something that I didn’t do, or if they are thinking that I am this good person who got a raw deal. Or if they’re not thinking anything and they’re just coming in. I would rather the latter.”
While it may seem the world has turned their backs on him, one person in particular remains by his side. Former “Empire” co-star, Taraji P. Henson continues to be an anchor for the former child star, even investing in his film, “B-Boy Blues.”
He does reflect on Terrence Howard, whom he still keeps in touch with. He comments on Howard’s recent comments as a guest on Bill Maher’s podcast, when he shared he turned down participating in a Marvin Gaye biopic because he didn’t feel comfortable kissing another man.
“We all have those family members who say things where you’re just like, ‘Just shut up,’” he said.
“I don’t like the way that he said it, but I understand what he was saying. There are roles that I could not commit to. And if he does believe that? Then I respect the man for being honest.”
