Planned Parenthood to Sue Over Defunding Clause in New Megabill
Planned Parenthood has promised to sue over a clause in the recently enacted Republican reconciliation megabill that would "defund" the group for up to a year.
Alexis McGill Johnson, the organization's president and CEO, stated on Thursday according to Politico, that the reconciliation bill is an "unlawful" and "targeted attack" on the organization and its patients.
“Everyone deserves access to high-quality, affordable health care. That’s what we’ve been fighting for the last century — and we’ll never stop,” McGill Johnson said in a statement. “We’ll be suing the Trump administration to stop this unlawful attack. See you in court.”
The bill, which passed the House just ahead of the July 4 weekend, includes a clause that would prevent abortion doctors from collecting Medicaid funds for other reproductive health care services.
The judgment followed a Supreme Court rule that will make it easier for states to deny Planned Parenthood and other clinics Medicaid funds.
The provision was a big victory for Republicans and anti-abortion activists who have long urged the federal government to restrict money from the organization due to its abortion services.
SBA Pro-Life America, one of the country's leading anti-abortion organizations, applauded the House decision on Thursday.
"Defunding the abortion industry, led by Planned Parenthood, marks the greatest pro-life victory since the Dobbs decision," the organization's president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, said in a statement.
Planned Parenthood asserts its services are "essential" to the country's health-care system.
According to the nonprofit, the provision threatens to close over 200 Planned Parenthood locations in 24 states. Ninety percent of those closures would occur in states where abortion is legal. If that happens, Planned Parenthood warns that more than 1 million patients will lose access to birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing and treatment, and abortion.
