Hide Your Secrets From Google

March 1, Google’s controversial privacy policy, which allows the company to gather personal information about its users, goes into effect. BET.com shows you how to delete your history.

In just two days on March 1, Google’s controversial privacy policy, which allows the company to gather personal information about its users, goes into effect.

The new policy allows the web giant to build a personal profile of users that could include personal information including age, gender and locality. Although it is not known exactly how Google would use the combined data, the policy has been widely criticized.

In order to stop their effort to build a permanent profile of your every move, there is a way to delete your browsing history — which will limit the extent to which Google can record your steps.

Here’s how:

1. Sign into your Google account via the homepage. Under your name in the upper right-hand corner, click on the dropdown menu and select “Account Settings.”

2. About halfway down the page there should be a section called “Services.” In that section, click on the link that says “Go to Web History.” It should be next to the words, “View, Enable, or Disable Web History.”

3. Lastly, once you are in that section, to remove all of your search details, click on “Remove Web History.” The button is near the top middle of the page. Once you have completed this, your history will remain disabled until you turn it back on.

If you’re upset that Google could soon track, record and build data off your every move, you’re not alone. The Center for Digital Democracy has filed a privacy complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. If Google is found at fault, the FTC could impose fines up to $16,000 per day for each violation.

Until federal regulations are in place, if you’d like to keep your most embarrassing secrets private, make the changes on your account today.
