Celebrities React to the Passing of Television Legend Mary Tyler Moore

The actress was 80.

Television icon and America's sweetheart Mary Tyler Moore died today in a Connecticut hospital. She was 80.

The actress's longtime rep, Mara Buxbaum, confirmed her death to TMZ in a statement that read, "Today, beloved icon Mary Tyler Moore passed away at the age of 80 in the company of friends and her loving husband of over 33 years, Dr. S. Robert Levine."

According to reports, Moore had been on a respirator for more than a week prior to her death. She had battled diabetes in the past and underwent brain surgery in 2011.

She became a household name in the early 1960s when she starred on The Dick Van Dyke Show and continued to superstardom on seven seasons of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. Throughout her career, she has received seven Emmys. In addition to her succesful television career, she also was recognized in the film community as she received an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her performance in the 1980 movie Ordinary People.

She was also inducted into the Television Hall of Fame in 1986, wrote two memoirs, and starred in more than 10 films.

She leaves behind no children, as she only had one son, Richard, Jr., whom she had with her first husband, Richard Meeker. Richard Jr. died from an accidental gunshot in 1980.
