XXL Drops Its Coveted 2022 Freshman Class

The latest class of emcees is an eclectic mix of rappers from all walks of life.

XXL Magazine’s highly-anticipated Freshman Class of 2022 has been revealed.

On Tuesday (June 14), the long-running hip-hop publication dropped its pick of the 12 game-changing newcomers in the rap industry, and the list– an eclectic mix of rappers from all walks of life– includes Cochise, Saucy Santana, Babyface Ray, KenTheMan, SoFaygo, Big Scarr, Big30, KayCyy, Doechii, Kali, Nardo Wick and BabyTron.

What makes this freshman class special is– it’s the culmination of ushering in an innovative squad of emcees and XXL’s 15th anniversary doing the freshman class.

According to the magazine, XXL’s staffers had the dubious honor of whittling down a list of nearly 100 talented up-and-coming rappers to 12. In the end, these 12 boundary-breaking artists made the cut.

The coveted list contains a unique addition that’s not been seen in the rap game– two queer rappers from Florida– Doechii, from Tampa; and Saucy Santana out of the Miami, respectively.

This year’s class will release cyphers, freestyles and interviews. Producer heavy-hitter Wheezy Outta Here will supply the beats for the ciphers. Wheezy will also describe his experience working with the dozen in upcoming interviews.

The list began in 2007 and skipped 2008. It returned in 2009. The 2022 Freshman Class issue hits newsstands on July 13.
