Aaliyah Finally Hits Number 1 on Adult R&B Airplay With ‘Gone’
Aaliyah may have left this world far too soon, but her voice still refuses to fade into the background. More than 20 years after her passing, the late singer has landed her very first No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart. “Gone,” her duet with Tank, has climbed to the top of the most recent list after taking over adult R&B radio stations during the September 12–18 tracking week.
It’s a moment that feels both overdue and bittersweet. Across her career, Aaliyah racked up 14 entries on the Adult R&B chart, yet she never saw one claim the crown. Her closest encounter with the top spot came back in 1994 when her take on The Isley Brothers’ “At Your Best (You Are Love)” peaked at number 4. That followed her breakout single “Back & Forth,” which hit number 6 earlier that same year. In total, she managed nine charting records while alive, before her life was cut short in a plane crash in August 2001 at only 22 years old.
For Tank, this collaboration adds another major win to his list of decorations. “Gone” marks his tenth Adult R&B Airplay number 1, putting him in elite company with Charlie Wilson and Usher. He now shares the record for the most chart-toppers by a male artist since the list launched in 1993. Only a handful of names have reached double digits at all, including Mary J. Blige with 10, Toni Braxton with 11, and Alicia Keys sitting at the very top with 14.
Beyond its Adult R&B success, “Gone” is gaining momentum elsewhere. The track recently climbed to number 13 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart, with radio reach jumping 24% to 5.8 million. With whispers of a possible posthumous Aaliyah album on the way, this song might just be the beginning of another chapter in her legacy.
